The peace and stability of the Western Balkans are in Hungary’s national interest, and Serbia has a key role in them – declared Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky in Belgrade after his discussion with Serbian Defence Minister Bratislav Gašić. The Hungarian minister of defence emphasized that Serbia’s place and future are in the European Union.

Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said that Hungary takes every opportunity to highlight the importance of Serbia’s accession to the EU. He added that our efforts remain unwavering, and the accession we continue to push for leads to Serbia’s EU membership quickly and fairly and meets the criteria of merit-based enlargement, while it recognizes the country’s contribution to the security, stability and prosperity of the European Union.

The minister underlined that Hungary, as a reliable NATO and EU member state, is actively engaged in international missions in the Western Balkans. It has been actively participating in the KFOR and EUFOR operations since the beginnings, and both missions have already had a Hungarian commander. Furthermore, hundreds of Hungarian troops are deployed with these missions, added the minister.

The minister of defence pointed out that besides our operational engagement, we continue to expand bilateral defence relations and support the regional efforts made for expanding defence capacities. Of all neighboring countries, Hungary is among the ones with the most intensive bilateral defence and military relations with Serbia, which have continuously been developing in recent years. Serbia is our strategic partner in several fields, and since 2023, we have extended this cooperation to encompass the dimensions of military equipment, defence industry and the armed forces – said the minister.

The Hungarian minister of defence and the delegation headed by him participated in the military parade “Strength of Unity”, at which Serbia presented its defence capabilities and technological developments.
