“An informal meeting of EU Defence Ministers is currently taking place here in Cyprus, where we are reviewing the most important challenges and tasks affecting Europe’s security,” wrote Defence Minister Dr. Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi on his social media page on June 8.

According to the Minister of Defence, the discussions will focus on continued support for Ukraine, strengthening maritime security, taking effective action against the shadow fleet assisting Russia, and the next steps in implementing the European Defence Strategy.

“In the current security environment, it is of vital importance to strengthen European cooperation, develop defence capabilities, and take joint action against the challenges that threaten the stability and security of our continent,” said the Minister.

At the informal meeting of EU Defence Ministers in Cyprus, Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi held brief discussions with his Austrian counterpart, Klaudia Tanner.

“We reaffirmed that the security of the Central European region, the protection of borders, and the further strengthening of bilateral defence cooperation are of essential importance to Hungary and Austria. To this end, we are planning a bilateral meeting soon to restore our previous successful cooperation. As we promised: We are returning to Europe!” wrote the Minister of Defence.

The defence minister said that the Cyprus presidency of the Council of the EU had made security and strategic preparedness one of its top priorities. “The meeting was originally planned for March but was postponed to June due to the situation in the Middle East. No immediate decisions have been taken at the session, but the EU has acknowledged the member states’ own priorities” – wrote Dr. Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi.
