NATO requested its member states in 2006 to establish a movement control unit to have a movement coordination operational capacity that is rapidly deployable worldwide. The Hungarian Defence Forces also joined the specific international cooperation, thus generating the joint capacity, in which it has undertaken an active role ever since.

Following the first steps and the preparations, the multinational unit reached its full operational capability by 2010. Since 2011, the member states have undertaken the lead nation’s tasks in a one-year rotation. After 2013, Hungary had the lead nation role in the MovCon MILU again in 2025.

During the meeting, the Hungarian party not only handed over the lead nation position but also shared with the Lithuanian leadership the movement control tasks carried out and planned by the multinational unit, as well as the lessons learned. At the end of the event, Lieutenant Colonel Gabriella Pepó, head of the HDF Logistic Support Command Transport and Movement Coordination Directorate, handed over the travelling plate, symbolising the lead nation role, to Major Rimvydas Pliskauskas, Chief of Staff of the Lithuanian military movement department taking over next year’s tasks.
