Since illegal migration traces its roots to Africa, Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky recently held discussions with the Kenyan and Nigerien ministers of defence in Brussels, with the aim of “protecting the Hungarian people and Europe”.

Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said in a video posted on Facebook on Tuesday, 21 March that Hungary’s security goes far beyond protecting its borders, “much further than that”.

“While a war is raging near our eastern borders, we must not forget that a constant pressure of illegal migration is weighing on our southern borders, which can be traced back to Africa. For this reason, it is highly important to monitor what is going on in these countries”, he added.

Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky noted that besides the meeting of EU defence and foreign affairs ministers, the Schuman Security and Defence Forum is also taking place in Brussels, with representatives of several African countries in attendance.

The Minister of Defence also said that he had had occasion to meet with his Kenyan and Nigerien counterparts, and that they together had reviewed the long-standing relations between their countries as well as the opportunities for future cooperation in the field of defence policy and security.

Peace requires strength, and we carry on with the work – noted Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky.
