The Hungarian Chief of Defence recalled that the Romanian–Hungarian Chiefs of Defence meetings had been organized traditionally on an annual basis, but, mainly because of the pandemic, these meetings had to be cancelled in the recent period.

“We are members of the same Alliance, and in the light of that, the challenges posed to NATO, the issues of taking joint action against terrorist organizations and the impacts of the Russo-Ukrainian War were high on the agenda of the meeting” – said General Gábor Böröndi PhD. The members of the two delegations reviewed the security challenges stemming from the geographical location of their countries, among others, as well as the responses given to these challenges by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The possibilities of cooperation and exchange of information between the two neighboring countries were also discussed.

In the near future, the Hungarian–Romanian Mixed Peacekeeping Battalion is going to be co-deployed in a foreign mission to further strengthen the two and a half decades-long cooperation. While visiting the Hódmezővásárhely unit, General Dr. Böröndi said that its troops will be engaged in a joint operation in KFOR as part of the KFOR Tactical Reserve Battalion (KTRBN) in Kosovo.

“The first deployment is going to take place in June, when a Hungarian company will arrive in Kosovo to cooperate with the battalion headquarters as one of its subunits” – said the Hungarian Chief of Defence.

At the end of their meeting, the military leaders attended a static display where they saw the capabilities of the Lynx infantry fighting vehicle and other items of military equipment in service with the mechanized infantry brigade.
