Farewell to the air service

After more than 40 years of service as aircrew member, Senior Warrant Officer István Molnár – an airman of the HDF 86th Helicopter Wing – took off on his last flight in EUFOR Operation Althea in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The seasoned Mi-17 aircrew member will soon retire in Szolnok, Hungary. Following his last flight in the mission, the personnel of the EUFOR Aviation Detachment received and greeted István “Moles” Molnár – with a water jet, a memorial certificate and a friendly goodbye hug.

This year too, the MEDEVAC (Medical Evacuation) capability of the peacekeeping mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina is being provided by the nation having the command of EUFOR Operation Althea, thus in 2024, by Hungary. Within this framework, the Hungarian personnel serving there guarantee air medical evacuation capabilities with the help of H145M helicopters, while air transport capabilities with a Mi-17 helicopter in Major General Dr. László Sticz’s year of command.
Hungarian Soldiers Participating in Saturday’s Rescue Receive Commander’s Recognition

Major General Dr. László Sticz, Commander of EUFOR Operation Althea, recently presented commander’s recognition coins in Camp Butmir, near Sarajevo to soldiers and civilian air traffic controllers participating in the early Saturday life-saving rescue operation. In the rescue operation, 14 Hungarian, two Dutch and two Italian soldiers carried out tasks directly, as well as an Austrian civilian. The two Italian soldiers will receive the commander’s recognition later.
EUFOR Commander’s year: Multinational Battalion under Hungarian command

This January, besides Major General László Sticz PhD, a Hungarian soldier taking over command of the EUFOR mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina, another epochal change occurred in the Multinational Battalion (MNBN), the maneuver force of the mission as well. The new commander of the subunit is Hungarian Lieutenant Colonel László Nagy.

On Friday, 8 December, at the Embassy of Germany in Budapest, the German War Graves Commission (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge) awarded the bronze grade of the Cross of Honor to Staff Sergeant Ferenc Czirók, Deputy Head of Catering Services, HDF Recreation, Training and Conference Center.
