A Country is Sovereign Until It Can Defend Itself

Being used to peace in our comfortable world, we tend to take security for granted. However, history has not halted; only our attention is fading sometimes. Freedom and sovereignty are still values to be protected, wrote Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky on his social media page on 4 January.

“Hungarian soldiers do not mean war. On the contrary, they are the key to peace. They embody the force about which everyone knows that exists; that is why we do not have to use it. Because where prepared, dedicated and patriotic soldiers serve, it is less likely that others want to tell us how to live. There is a family behind the Hungarian soldiers. Parents who let their children go, with fear and pride. Companions who know that service is not connected to working hours. Children whose father or mother in a uniform is a role model. This is why Hungarian soldiers are not someone else; they are us. A country’s sovereignty is not built on mottos but capabilities. It is built on knowledge, discipline, state-of-the-art equipment, moral conduct and patriotism. That is why we develop the Hungarian Defence Forces and honour our soldiers. Hungarian soldiers are not memories from the past. They are the security of the future”, wrote the minister.
