During his service, he paid special attention to the German–Hungarian program “Structured Partnership in Logistics”, which is aimed at establishing tactical-level, multinational logistic subunits meeting the NATO capability code criteria. Among the joint German–Hungarian capabilities, the Bulk Fuel Installation reached full operational capability in 2022, while the Medium Transport Company in 2023.
In recognition of his outstanding work in the field of cooperation between the two nations, General Dr. Gábor Böröndi, Chief of HDF General Staff awarded a Partnership Medal of Merit to Lieutenant General Gerald Funke. The decoration was presented by Colonel Zoltán Kiss, Deputy Commander, HDF Logistic Support Command during the handover-takeover ceremony.
The new commander is no stranger to Erfurt, as he was chief of staff of the Bundeswehr Logistic Command between 2017 and 2018.
General Funke is going to continue his military career as commander of the Bundeswehr Support Command (Unterstützungskommando der Bundeswehr).
