The German-Hungarian Joint Services Working Group organised bilateral consultations in Budapest across six thematic areas, as part of a series of binational visits at increasingly high levels taking place since September. The delegation also inspected the Hungarian Defence Forces’ military equipment and training aids of German origin.

Eckart Meyer-Höper, Deputy Director for the Innovation and Cyber Division at the German Ministry of Defence, visited Budapest on 12–13 October 2026. The delegation was received by General Zsolt Sándor, Chief of Defence, and Major General Zoltán Apáti, Director of Staff of the HDF. The aim and task of the German-Hungarian Joint Services Working Group is to contribute to the development of modern, sustainably operating armed forces with an adequate deterrence posture by utilising opportunities for bilateral cooperation.

During the plenary session, participants reviewed the achievements of the sub-working groups in recent times with regard to the Land Forces, the Air Force, logistics and training. Among the areas examined, particular emphasis was placed on the training and instruction opportunities provided by the German partner in relation to the German military equipment in service with the HDF.

The day continued at the Tata barracks of the HDF 25th Armoured Brigade, where members of the delegation inspected the unit’s simulation and training centre, led by Brigade Commander Brigadier General Zoltán Németh. At this training centre, which is unique in the region, soldiers can practise controlling and firing the PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzers and Leopard 2A7HU main battle tanks in a virtual environment. Thanks to the interconnected systems, tank crews can even carry out their tasks whilst supporting one another, in real time and under simulated conditions. The demonstration was complemented by a review of the unit’s armaments, with particular emphasis on drone capabilities and the area of individual weapons and equipment.
