The Day of German Unity is celebrated every year in early October to commemorate the reunification of Germany in 1990. The eastern and western parts of the country, which had been divided after the Second World War, existed as separate states for almost four decades. The peaceful revolution of 1989, the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November, and the subsequent political changes paved the way for reunification. The historic event of October 3, 1990 has become a symbol of freedom, unity and European cooperation for the German people.

In connection with the event, General Zsolt Sándor emphasised that Hungary is a committed ally of Germany, not only within NATO but also within the European Union. Alongside shared security interests, the exchange of military expertise is also a key pillar of cooperation between the two countries.

“Germany has long been a reliable and key ally of ours. Gaining insight into the lessons learned of the Bundeswehr is particularly valuable for the Hungarian Defence Forces, as many of the tried-and-tested solutions in the German armed forces can be successfully applied here too, once adapted to our specific circumstances. The strength of our cooperation in the Alliance lies in the fact that we share our knowledge with one another and work together to find answers to the security challenges of the future,” said the General.

There has been a close partnership between the two armed forces for decades. Soldiers regularly take part in joint training sessions, exercises and professional programs, whilst logistics, military education and the exchange officer scheme also play a significant role in this cooperation. Hungarian exchange officers serving at German headquarters are able to gain first-hand experience of the Bundeswehr’s functioning and developments.

Shared history and current Alliance commitments demonstrate that cooperation between Hungary and Germany makes an important contribution to European security and to NATO’s collective defence.
