Today, it can be stated on the global level that terrorism poses one of the most important security threats. The government of Hungary already realized this years ago, and sticks to the principle that instead of bringing trouble home, we must take the assistance to the root of troubles.

Terrorism is one of the triggering causes of the illegal migration afflicting Europe, including Hungary as well. Through various initiatives, Hungary is cooperating with afflicted countries around the world, and is participating in several international initiatives aimed at curbing terrorism and illegal migration.

The Hungarian Defence Forces have already participated, on several occasions, in the annual Flintlock joint military exercise, which has been organized by the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) for NATO allies and cooperating African countries since 2005. NATO’s objective is to develop cooperation among international partners and allied Special Operations Forces (SOF), as well as the parties’ resilience in counter-terrorism activities. Starting at the end of April, the two-week SOF exercise will involve 500-plus servicemembers from more than 30 countries. Exercise Flintlock 2025 targets global security challenges, showcasing the importance of counter-terrorism fight and joint action against regional instability, emphasizing and promoting international partnership in the security environment of West and North Africa.

Exercise Flintlock 2025 will take place in Côte d’Ivoire. During the exercise, the participating Hungarian personnel will be mentoring a Chadian unit, which is in harmony with the strategic partnership framework signed by Hungary and Chad in September 2024. The participants of the joint training event will be practicing tactical capabilities, maritime operations, battlefield drills as well as border security operations.
