Hungary Is Actively Engaged in Defending NATO’s Eastern Flank

The chief of defence informed the Military Committee about the Headquarters Multinational Division Centre (HQ MNDC) reaching its full operational capability, thus, a leading command element indispensable to NATO is now available in Hungary.

At the two-day meeting of the chiefs of defence of the NATO member states, Gábor Böröndi also said that Hungary plans to hold a large-scale exercise in the autumn to assess the resilience of the country and the society, as well as the military crisis response capability.

The top military leaders discussed the ongoing operations and agreed that NATO’s Eastern Flank must be strengthened, filled with forces and equipment, and appropriate training must be provided.

General Böröndi told us that communication and meeting with partners have outstanding importance in the eyes of the chiefs of defence. Therefore, besides the 32 NATO member states, the military leaders of 27 partner states also participated in the Military Committee session. The latter arrived from several parts of the world: from New Zealand and Japan to Qatar, Tunisia and Algeria to Azerbaijan.

“NATO knows that progress can be made only in an alliance and with friends”, emphasised the chief of the HDF Defence Staff, adding that it is the presence of the non-NATO member states that provides the strength, alliance system and environment that enhances NATO’s deterring capability. He said that “the future is for alliances and cooperations, as it was confirmed at the meeting in Brussels.”
