The military machinery offered by Hungary to Bosnia and Herzegovina arrived at Camp Butmir, which hosts the EUFOR Operation Althea, on the evening of 17 October. In the following period, the Hungarian military engineers – meeting the demand of the Bosnian and Herzegovinian authorities and coordinated by the EUFOR – participated in the elimination of damages caused by the flood and landslides.

Restoration works are currently going on in the Western Balkans country after one of the largest natural crises of the past years. Besides other offers, Hungary also provides military engineering help for this.

Two CASE 695 SV universal military machines and operating personnel of seven arrived there from the HDF 14th Engineer Regiment of Szentes. The morning following their arrival, they started the day with a briefing, then Commander EUFOR Major General Dr. László Sticz welcomed the group, which set off for Buturović Polje, near the city of Konjic, southwest of Sarajevo. There, they carry out their duty in agreement with local emergency management services. The tasks of those participating in remediation are summarised and given for the next day by a coordination committee.

The group of engineers is supported by the LOT Jablanica – the Liaison Observation Team competent in the territory –, the National Support Element of the Hungarian contingent and local authorities.

On the first working day of the machinery, Major General Sticz visited the crisis-stricken area and took a look at the activity of the soldiers from Szentes, together with a delegation from the mayor’s office in Konjic and the members of the civil defence service. Local authorities underlined that they and the residents are grateful to the EUFOR, especially to the Hungarian soldiers for the help.
