In the person of Major Balázs Major, the Helicopter Tactics Instructor Course (HTIC) of the Multinational Helicopter Training Centre (MHTC) in Sintra, Portugal has been launched with a Hungarian Chief Instructor for the first time. Like in earlier years, Hungary has been assuming an active and many-sided role.

Beyond providing host nation support at HDF Pápa Airbase, the Hungarian Defence Forces are participating in the flying phase of the HTIC running between October 5 and 21 with helicopter crews, an opposing force as well as reconnaissance and ground support capabilities. Besides, for the first time this year, thanks to the Skylark 3 Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS), the flying phase support of the HTIC has expanded with a new Hungarian capability.

The MHTC is the only institution in Europe to provide helicopter tactics courses. It offers three different training programs, of which the Helicopter Tactics Instructor Course is one of the highest-level helicopter tactical training courses.

The HTIC, a “train-the-trainer” program not only improves the individual tactical expertise of helicopter aircrews, but also trains instructors who can later mentor personnel by delivering their knowledge and experiences gained during the HTIC in their own national environments. For this reason, planning, command evaluation also play important roles besides task execution.

This year, seven nations of the 16 MHTC member countries are participating in some form in the HTIC: among others, the Bundeswehr with Airbus H135 and Sikorsky CH-53 Sea Stallion helicopters, Portugal with AW101 helicopters, the Czech Air Force with Mi-171s and Hungary with Airbus H145M and H225M helicopters.
