The EFES-24 is one of the major international military exercises conducted in Türkiye. This year, the exercise took place with the participation of 49 countries, involving some 11,000 military personnel. At the invitation of the Turkish side, the Hungarian special forces participated in the exercise for the first time.

The first phase of the maneuvers, a Computer-Aided Command Post Exercise (CAX-CPX) was intended for exercising the professional command of the personnel strength and the capabilities, where an international staff formed of soldiers of different nations was leading the units and the subunits. The second phase, was devoted to task execution both on the tactical and the operational levels. Special operations also had a role in the multinational efforts, and within their framework, the soldiers of the Hungarian Defence Forces 1st Special Operations Group also proved their skills. Sniper shooting practices, fighting in built-up areas (FIBUA/MOUT), time-sensitive operations enriched with various insertion and extraction techniques, interceptions and medical evacuations (MEDEVAC) were also part of the training program. During these actions, the soldiers used the important and efficient equipment called Airborne Tactical Extraction Platform (AriTEP) to leave the area of operations rapidly and securely.

During the training, great emphasis was laid on harmonizing the procedures of different nations, i.e. on strengthening interoperability. Thanks to the continuous practicing, the participants honed their already existing skills and capabilities, but the real challenge was posed by the linguistic and procedural differences.

The solutions often differ, as each nation brings different lessons learned and they approach a given task differently. Accordingly, different military organizations have different items of equipment. However, achieving harmony is indispensable during the execution of a complex task. Thus, the main objective of the first part of the exercise was to get to know and use each other’s military equipment and share the operational lessons learned.

The event was closed with a tactical, large-scale, complex Live-Fire Field Exercise, where the participating nations demonstrated their ability to destroy the simulated enemy in perfect cooperation. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Turkish Defence Minister Yaşar Güler, as well as high-ranking military and governmental officers of the participating nations also attended the Distinguished Visitors’ Day.
