The two-day final exercise of the 48th International Military Observers’ Course got underway in Szolnok on October 14. During the examination, the blue-helmet soldiers must demonstrate the knowledge they have acquired over the past three weeks. If they pass and receive their UN-accredited certificate, the path to international peacekeeping missions will be open to them.

On the final days of the exercise, organised by the HDF Peace Support Training Centre, the soldiers are required to carry out patrols, weapons inspections, conflict management and intelligence gathering, while engaging in ongoing negotiations with representatives of the opposing parties and ‘local authorities’. The tasks also include, for example, managing a crisis situation around a refugee camp after – according to the fictional scenario – a shell explodes near a camp resident.

“Once I’ve completed the course, I’d like to apply to join MINURSO in Western Sahara and the UN missions in Armenia,” said Márton Kapocsi, a participant from the HDF ‘Ludovika’ Battalion, as he outlined his plans for the future.

Of course, the training did no begin just now: during the first week, the participants learnt the basics of being a UN observer in the classroom. From the second week onwards, the focus shifted to fieldcraft in the Kiskunhalas area, where the trainees worked in patrol groups to resolve realistic, stressful situations. With the help of the HDF 86th Helicopter Wing, they even carried out aerial reconnaissance tasks.
