On October 14, personnel from the HDF 37th Engineer Regiment welcomed the defence attachés accredited to Hungary at the Damjanich Barracks in Szentes. Diplomats from twelve nations accredited in Budapest reviewed the regiment’s finest assets: following the briefing by the commanding officer, they visited the unit museum, viewed the vehicle fleet, the maintenance workshop and the water purification equipment during a static display. They were able to try out the PTS-M tracked amphibious vehicle, and watched a dynamic demonstration of the PMP pontoon bridge kit.

Colonel Dr Attila Csurgó, the unit’s commander, emphasised that “the primary task of military attachés is to familiarise themselves with the host nation’s armed forces. They must be aware of our country’s capabilities and capacities, naturally without gaining access to sensitive information. Our regiment has carried out significant tasks in recent times, such as ensuring the supply of drinking water during the summer, and the construction of the Paks sill. This is precisely why I consider it important that military diplomats stationed in our country are aware of our capabilities.”
Colonel Roland Bartakovics, Slovak Defence Attaché and Head of the Budapest Military Attaché Corps, said that, as an army engineer, he particularly enjoys visiting Szentes. “I have taken part in many exercises here, and I am delighted to be back now in a different capacity. I believe that every attaché is a forward outpost for their own ministry. We cooperate, because this is a position of trust; military diplomacy and network building help to strengthen the alliance systems among our countries.”
The program provided an excellent opportunity to exchange lessons learned and deepen military diplomatic relations. Face-to-face meetings help to strengthen mutual trust and contribute to a better understanding of each other’s duties and service.
