The Hungarian drama about the military rescue operation in Kabul sets an example of military heroism, underlined the defence minister at a press conference held in the “ruin city”, Újdörögd on 9 October.

Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said that Hungarian history is full of heroic acts that should be remembered because these set examples and give firmness. However, there are also contemporary, living heroes, who are often forgotten unworthily. He also added that the film about the 2021 military rescue operation in Kabul, which will be premiered to the public in the second half of 2025, “manifests how Hungarian soldiers set an example”. He recalled that the HDF had joined the military operations in Afghanistan in 2003. The film entitled The Kabul Operation narrates a story that unfolded three years ago when the Hungarian Defence Forces evacuated 540 people, including 180 children from Afghanistan during the withdrawal of NATO forces.

The minister talked about the successful reservist recruitment campaign of the HDF, adding that a miniseries is about to start on channel TV2 and a military show is also being prepared. These all aim at making as many people as possible familiar with the lives of soldiers. Zoltán Pető, Deputy CEO, Media Services and Support Trust Fund (MTVA), highlighted that “it is a main task of public service media to talk about the current events of Hungarian history on its own, similarly to introducing the legacy of our culture and history”. Zsombor Dyga, the director of the film said that besides introducing the collective rescue operation, there is also a romantic storyline in the movie’s background, thus making the plot more personal. The film is based on a true story filled with fictional elements. The executive producer is Tamás Lajos and the leading actors are Blanka Mészáros and Gábor Jászberényi.
