Meeting of V4 Chiefs of Defence in Poland
Text: HDF General Staff | 13:51 October 15, 2024Chiefs of defence of the Visegrád Four (V4) countries – among them, General Dr. Gábor Böröndi, Chief of HDF General Staff – recently reviewed the security challenges of Central and Eastern Europe as well as the issues of joint cooperation at their meeting held in Gdynia, Poland.
The participants of the two-day conference exchanged views on the goals of the Polish presidency and the military development plans. The logistic challenges faced by armed forces within the framework of NATO–EU cooperation were also on the agenda of the meeting. Since July, Poland has been holding the rotating presidency of the V4 countries.
Hungary remains committed to the V4 group, and considers the Visegrád Four as a distinguished forum of cooperation, especially due to the changed regional security situation and the need for the regional coordination of defence tasks.
During its six-month tenure of the presidency of the Council of the European Union, Hungary is giving high priority to deepening the cooperation with V4 countries, in which great emphasis is being laid on regional security issues, particularly on lessons learned of the Russo-Ukrainian War and the issue of transformation.
Due to its geographic position, Hungary plays a prominent role in reinforcement and troop movements from the western and the southern directions, and supports both NATO and EU-initiatives in the interest of ensuring the rapid movement of forces.
Following the meeting, the chiefs of defence observed an exercise conducted with the participation of the special Formoza Military Unit of the Polish navy, as well as Czech, Slovak and Hungarian special operations forces (SOF) units and the Polish rescue vessel Lech.
In a couple of days, the meeting of V4 chiefs of defence in Poland was followed up by a session of the European Union Military Committee in Budapest. At the event starting on Monday, the EU chiefs of defence met with those of the Western Balkan countries. This was the first occasion when the EU Military Committee officially held its session at Chiefs of Defence level outside of Brussels.
