Security needs to be maintained, not just safeguarded

“Stability in the Western Balkans directly impacts our country’s security. Maintaining peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region is therefore not a distant foreign policy issue, but a fundamental Hungarian national interest. Hungary has been engaged in peacekeeping in the region for nearly three decades. The professionalism and expertise of our soldiers are demonstrated by the fact that in 2024 a Hungarian commander led the EUFOR Operation ALTHEA, and since March 2026 our country has provided the operation’s deputy commander,” stated the Minister of Defence.
Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi emphasised: “Our tasks have expanded, so we must adapt our readiness capabilities accordingly. We are increasing the authorised strength of the Hungarian Defence Forces’ over-the-horizon reserve force from 150 to 300 personnel. This is partly necessary because, from September, the Hungarian rifle company has also been placed on domestic standby. Additionally, it is also essential to adjust the number of days personnel can spend on deployment. This will ensure that the necessary forces are available at short notice should the operational situation require. This is not a self-serving increase in numbers, but responsible military planning and preparedness.”
“It is in Hungary’s interest to have peace, stability in the Western Balkans, and for the HDF to be able to fulfil all the undertaken tasks with the necessary strength and preparedness. We need a defence force that is prepared to maintain peace and capable of taking action!” – the Minister of Defence concluded his post.
