“It is no exaggeration to say that the crown of a military career is serving in foreign missions, where everybody goes with the most state-of-the-art equipment currently in service with the Hungarian Defence Forces, following the highest-level pre-deployment training” – said Major General Zoltán Schmidt, Deputy Chief of HDF General Staff for Economic Affairs in Pákozd on the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers on 29 May.

In his ceremonial speech, Major General Schmidt underlined that “the work of Hungarian troops is internationally renowned and recognised. They are very well prepared for fulfilling their tasks, and the lessons learned during international missions provide knowledge to the whole HDF that cannot be acquired elsewhere”.

Regarding the peacekeeping missions, he said that soldiers have a difficult task as these countries are characterized by unstable internal situations, tensions deriving from religion and constant conflicts. In many cases, Hungarian soldiers mean hope, among others, because from giving out donations to helping with peace talks, they always work on restoring and recreating peace.

“The strong home front and the stable emotional background are indispensable for service, and these can be provided to our personnel only by you” – he said, finally giving thanks for the support of the family members. He also added that the memory of soldiers killed in action during their tours of duty with missions must be kept alive.

The ceremony continued with the presentation of appreciations, then Major General Zoltán Schmidt and Viktória Görög, Managing Director of the Pákozd Memorial Park, laid wreaths on the memorial, among others.
