In the last few years, you have demonstrated that you are ready to safeguard the skies of Hungary” – said Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky during a ceremonial staff meeting held on the occasion of 15 March at the HDF 101st Aviation Wing in Kecskemét.

“We are living in the era of revival. After the trauma of socialism, the Hungarian Defence Forces did not succeed in winning respect for themselves again. The downsizing of the armed forces, the consolidation of military units and the barrack closures disorientated the soldiers. Now, however, we have been carrying out a comprehensive reform and a complete rearmament for the first time since the 1989 change of regime” – pointed out the minister in his ceremonial speech.
He stated that in itself, the procurement of modern technology does not amount to a capability. The renewing Hungarian Defence Forces are laying emphasis on developing the host infrastructure0, increasing personnel numbers, conducting training based on modern doctrines and continuously rehearsing dangerous military operations.
“Today the security environment has changed, and therefore the military we need must be adequate for defending the homeland as a premier force in the region. The international exercises demonstrate our preparedness. Our next test of strength is this year’s Exercise Adaptive Hussars” – said the minister.

As a result of recruitment, the number of the enlisted has significantly increased. The 5000th territorial reservist will sign on in a couple of weeks. Territorial reservists do service for a period of time besides their studies or civilian occupation. The flexibility of the training program and the dedication of the applicants is shown by the fact that later on, every tenth reservist applies to become a professional or contract soldier.
“The strong sense of national identity and our new organizational culture provide a background for those rapid reaction, well-armed forces of high operational value which are being gradually built in Hungary. Our soldiers enjoy the citizens’ moral and material esteem. Today, the HDF salaries are competitive on the market” – stated Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky.
The minister of defence spoke highly of the personnel of the HDF 101st Aviation Wing, who safeguard the skies of Hungary. “Pause and mediocrity are alien to your service. Because of your dedication, we would like to revive an old tradition: besides central ceremonies, from now on, we will hand over recognitions at staff meetings as well. Let the outstanding performances become visible to the entire unit.”
According to the minister, in 1848-49, Hungary showed the world that it does not tolerate oppression, which has characterized the nation ever since. “Since then, every generation at arms is drawing from the tradition of the first Hungarian honvéd (home defence) soldiers of 1848. Honvéds are soldiers who serve the Hungarian nation and defend the country even at the cost of their lives. Now it is our turn to carry on this legacy” – said the minister at the ceremonial staff meeting.

“Like our 1848-49 honvéd soldiers, we are ready for the defence of the homeland. Freedom and security are not givens. They will be taken away from us if we don’t take care of them.” – stated General Dr. Gábor Böröndi. The Chief of the HDF Defence Staff pointed out that the Kecskemét-based Aviation Wing not only safeguards the skies of Hungary but is also a crucial pillar in the NATO Alliance system.
“Besides air policing, your responsibilities include the operation of fighter and transport aircraft, the conduct of operational airlift missions, the maintenance of air support capability and the commissioning of modern equipment, for example training simulators and new Gripen fighter jets. Respect is due to all of you for your service. Your performance on international exercises attests to your professionalism.”
The chief of defence stated that he considers his main task to raise the Hungarian Defence Forces from the tactical to the operational level. He recalled that due to terrorism, migration and the wars raging in the world, the Hungarian Defence Forces started the developments in time, so that they can stand prepared for possible conflicts. He called the personnel’s active contribution, too, an important element of modernization.

At the end of the event, Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, General Dr. Gábor Böröndi and Colonel Ferenc Könczöl, Commander, HDF 101st Aviation Wing handed over recognitions to members of the personnel for their outstanding performance.
Colonel György Grécs, Chief of Staff of the Aviation Wing received the military grade of the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of Hungary; Captain Boglárka Wenhardt-Tüskés and Sergeant First Class Sándor Homoki-Szabó the bronze class of the Service Medal of Merit, while chief consultant Annamária Szabó the 3rd grade of the Honorable Title for National Defence.
On the occasion of the national day, the President of Hungary appointed Colonel Ferenc Könczöl, the commander of the HDF 101st Aviation Wing brigadier general.
