They have fought the good fight, they have kept the faith

The Hungarian Olympians returning home from Paris were received by a celebrating crowd in the Puskás Statue Park. The sportsmen arrived right from the airport to receive the first words of appreciation on home soil. Besides the soldiers of the HDF Sports Company, MoD State Secretary for Sport Dr. Ádám Schmidt was also present at the event.

The Olympians lining up on the stage were first greeted by Zsolt Gyulai, President of the Hungarian Olympic Committee. “We have fought the good fight, we have struggled for every second, for every score, sometimes even against an overwhelming force, and we have reached a result that we can be rightly proud of” – this was how the president expressed his appreciation.

The Hungarian Olympians go down in the annals of Hungary’s sport history with six gold, seven silver and six bronze medals, so they are placed 14th overall on the medal table.

Altogether 23 soldiers of the HDF Sport Company qualified for the Paris Olympic Games. After Tokyo, Private First Class Ádám Varga was the silver medalist for the second time in the men’s K-1 1000 meters event. Corporal Noémi Pupp and Corporal Sára Fojt won bronze medals in the kayak-canoe women’s K-2 500 meters and also in the women’s K-4 500 meters, in the latter event with Tamara Csipes and Alida Gazsó. After a masterful competition, the Hungarian team composed of Sergeant Gergely Siklósi, Máté Koch, Tibor Andrásfi and Dávid Nagy won the gold medal in men’s team epee fencing. Corporal Blanka Guzi came in fourth in modern pentathlon – women’s individual, while Private First Class Csaba Bőhm was placed thirteenth in modern pentathlon – men’s individual. The duo of Corporal Ágnes Kiss and Bianka Nagy finished fourth in kayak-canoe women’s C-2 500 meters.

Among the male athletes, Private First Class Balázs Adolf finished seventh in kayak-canoe men’s C-1 1000 meters. In the same event, Private First Class Dániel Fejes was placed third in Final B, and achieved the 11th placement in the overall results. The third medal of our kayakers-canoeists on Friday, a silver one was won by the duo of Bence Nádas–Sándor Tótka. In the same event, the Final B saw the duo of Bálint Kopasz– Private First Class Ádám Varga finishing seventh, and 15th overall. The Hungarian duo of Corporal Rita Récsei and Corporal Bence Venyercsán finished 21st in the marathon race walk mixed relay. After a win and a loss, Sergeant Zoltán Lévai did not get into the repechage in the men’s Greco-Roman 77 kg, so he could not compete for a medal.
