Lieutenant General Ferenc Kajári
14:33 May 9, 2023Lieutenant General Ferenc Kajári was born on 5th July 1967 in Budapest, Hungary. He is married to Veronika and has a daughter and a son.
Upon graduating from the military secondary school, he joined the Kossuth Lajos Military College of the Hungarian Defence Forces in 1985. He commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1988 with an armoured reconnaissance officer degree and a general engineer degree.
Between 1988 and 1996, Major General Kajári served in various Infantry Brigades and MI positions as a platoon leader, company commander, S2 staff officer and Brigade S2.
In 1996, he was assigned to the Hungarian Engineer Contingent of IFOR and served as an S2 and liaison officer in the staff. On completion of his deployment, his career continued at the Ministry of Defence, where he served in a number of positions, most notably as the Aide-de-Camp to the Deputy State Secretary for NATO Integration. In 1998 he was selected to deploy in one of the newly established Partnership for Peace staff positions, and was assigned to the Headquarters of SACLANT, where he served in the PfP staff element until Hungary’s NATO accession in 1999 when he repositioned to serve in the Education and Training Department until his return to Hungary in 2001.
From 2001 he was serving in different staff positions at the J2 Directorate of the Hungarian Defence Forces. In the same year he enrolled to the National Defence University, and in 2004 earned his Master’s degree in military leadership.
In 2004 he deployed to Darfur as an EU representative and Military Observer of the African Union Mission in the Sudan (AMIS), where by the second half of his tour he organised the S2 section in his sector and became the sector S2 chief. In 2007 he deployed to Afghanistan, where he served as the first Hungarian Chief CJ2, ACOS in RC-North of ISAF.
Between 2014 and 2015 he attended the General Staff Course of the National University of Public Service, where he earned the “ZRÍNYI Award” of the class of 2015.
In 2016 he was appointed as the director of the Military National Security Service Intelligence Directorate. In 2017 he was promoted to Brigadier General, and in 2021 to Major General, and in 2023 to Lieutenant General.
2021 marks his most noted tour as he was selected and deployed to the position of Commander of the NATO mission KFOR until the hand-over in 2022 when he continued his service as the director of the Military National Security Service Intelligence Directorate until his promotion to which took up to his new assignment to Deputy Chief of Defence Staff on 8th May 2023

Hungarian soldiers receive French military decoration

In recognition of providing security for the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Ministry of the French Armed Forces awarded a military decoration to Sergeant First Class Balázs Németh and Staff Sergeant Lajos Serb. The decoration was presented to the recipients by France’s ambassador in Budapest.

Run for Peace

Today, there was a run not only in every HDF garrison town but also in each member state of the International Military Sports Council (CISM), said Colonel Dr. Zoltán Eleki, Deputy Head of the Defence Staff Training Directorate, on 18 February at the run held on the occasion of the CISM International Day of Military Sports on the athletics field of the Budapest Honvéd Sports Association.

Live Firing First Conducted with the New H225M Helicopter

A capability sustainment live firing exercise is being held with the rotary-wing aircraft of the Szolnok-based helicopter wing at the Kőröshegy training area and shooting range in the Bakony Hills during the second half of February. Within the framework of this, live firing is being first performed with the newly commissioned H225M helicopter of the Hungarian Defence Forces, announced Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky.

Soaring Cooperation

The partnership between Hungary and Saab AG dates back to 2001. This was the year when Hungary ordered the first batch of Gripen fighter aircraft. On 18 February 2025, the defence equipment and aircraft manufacturing company opened a new office in Budapest. In the future, the Hungarian Defence Forces, the Swedish company and the players of Hungarian defence industry will pay special attention to the development of avionics. To this end, they will establish a joint Air Capability Development Center as well.

Polish-Hungarian Cooperation Plan Signed This Year Again

Representatives of the Ministries of Defence of Poland and Hungary signed a military-to-military cooperation plan in Budapest on 13 February. On the Hungarian side, Colonel István Hajnal, Head of the MoD Department for International Cooperation, and on the Polish side, Colonel Sławomir Mnitowski, defence, military and air attaché of the Republic of Poland signed the document.

Maintenance for the first time in Hungary

Aircraft technicians of the Kecskemét-based HDF 101st Aviation Wing recently carried out annual maintenance work on the KC-390 Millennium transport aircraft of the Hungarian Defence Forces inside the unique C-17 hangar of the multinational Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC) Program at the HDF 47th Air Base, Pápa, Hungary.

The air was glowing at the Szomód range on 12 February, when the soldiers of the 1st Infantry Battalion of the HDF 1st Armoured Brigade first used the Carl Gustaf recoilless rifles during a live firing exercise. Meanwhile, the personnel of the brigade’s 2nd Infantry Battalion practiced firing from BTR-80/A APCs. The first use of large-calibre weapons is always exciting but thanks to the appropriate preparation, the exercise was truly an experience for the soldiers.

The United States is Committed but Europe Has to Do More

Hungary is significantly contributing to the collective defence of the Alliance, declared the defence minister in Brussels following the Meeting of NATO Ministers of Defence. Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky told us that in the international defence alliance, they had the opportunity to meet the new US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in person for the first time. We strongly support the position of the US Government regarding the conflict in Ukraine: the bloodshed must end, and efforts should focus on achieving peace as soon as possible, instead of prolonging the war, emphasized the defence minister.
