Major General Zoltán Somogyi

Brigadier General Zoltán Somogyi was born on 27th February 1974 in Fehérgyarmat. He began his military service in August 1992 at the Military Command Collage in Szentendre. He graduated as an artillery officer with a BSc in Land Surveying Engineering in 1996. He served 8 years in a various artillery officer assignments including 4 years as Battery Commander within the HDF 5th Mechanized Infantry Brigade 5th Self Propelled Artillery Battalion in Debrecen. During his artillery officer carrier, he successfully completed the Battery Commander Course of the German Bundeswehr and gathered experiences also in the field of rocket artillery. In 2003 he was deployed to the position of the 2nd Company Commander of the Hungarian Guard and Security Battalion, KFOR Kosovo and in 2004 he assumed command of the Hungarian Guard and Security Contingent, KFOR Skopje.

In 2007, he was appointed to the position of Hungarian Joint Force Command J3 Staff Officer in Székesfehérvár and he was promoted to Major. In 2009, he was assigned as a Liaison Officer to the German Operations Command in Potsdam and to the German MOD Planning Staff in Berlin focused on Hungarian contribution to ISAF operation. In 2010, he graduated from the National Defense University with MSc degree in Military Leadership. In 2012 he graduated the 7th German National Joint Admiral and General Staff Course at the Bundeswehr Command & Staff Collage in Hamburg. Following that, he was appointed to the position of the Military Assistant to the Chief of Land Forces of the Hungarian Joint Force Command and he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. From 2013 to 2016, he served as the Head of Combat Support Branch G3 HDF JFC.

During this assignment in 2013-2014 he was deployed for seven months to Afghanistan as a senior advisor and head of a brigade level advisory team. In 2016, he was assigned to the position of Chief G37 HDF Joint Force Command. In 2017, his next appointment was at HDF JFC where he held the post of Chief J3/ACOS Operations and was promoted to the rank of Colonel.

From August 2018 he started and led the planning project of Headquarters Multinational Division Centre. He was appointed to Chief of Staff of the Headquarters Multinational Division Centre on 01 June 2020 and he was promoted to his current rank on the 20th of August 2020.

12 May 2022 – 17 May 2023 he served as Chief of Staff of EUFOR Force HQ in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Since 15 July 2023 he has been assuming the position Director of the General Staff Hungarian Defence Forces.

He is married to his wife Beatrix and lives in Várpalota.

Flares in the sky

During the NATO Electronic Warfare Force Integration Program’s (NEWFIP) multinational Exercise Ramstein Guard 2025, the aircrew of the HDF 86th Helicopter Wing was practicing the release of infrared flares from a H145M helicopter. This pyrotechnic device can be useful as countermeasure when the aircraft is targeted with guided missiles.

Hungary will be represented by 9 athletes and 11 accompaniers at the competition in Italy in March. Operation and training with a new German-Hungarian joint venture

From now on, Leopard Hungary MRO Ltd, a new German-Hungarian joint venture with Hungarian majority holding is responsible for the operation of the Hungarian Defence Forces artillery and armor fleet and the training of Hungarian experts – the Hungarian managing director of the company in Munich told Hungarian news agency MTI on Thursday, 20 February, following the signing of the company’s founding document.

Hungarian soldiers receive French military decoration

In recognition of providing security for the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Ministry of the French Armed Forces awarded a military decoration to Sergeant First Class Balázs Németh and Staff Sergeant Lajos Serb. The decoration was presented to the recipients by France’s ambassador in Budapest.

Run for Peace

Today, there was a run not only in every HDF garrison town but also in each member state of the International Military Sports Council (CISM), said Colonel Dr. Zoltán Eleki, Deputy Head of the Defence Staff Training Directorate, on 18 February at the run held on the occasion of the CISM International Day of Military Sports on the athletics field of the Budapest Honvéd Sports Association.

Live Firing First Conducted with the New H225M Helicopter

A capability sustainment live firing exercise is being held with the rotary-wing aircraft of the Szolnok-based helicopter wing at the Kőröshegy training area and shooting range in the Bakony Hills during the second half of February. Within the framework of this, live firing is being first performed with the newly commissioned H225M helicopter of the Hungarian Defence Forces, announced Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky.

Soaring Cooperation

The partnership between Hungary and Saab AG dates back to 2001. This was the year when Hungary ordered the first batch of Gripen fighter aircraft. On 18 February 2025, the defence equipment and aircraft manufacturing company opened a new office in Budapest. In the future, the Hungarian Defence Forces, the Swedish company and the players of Hungarian defence industry will pay special attention to the development of avionics. To this end, they will establish a joint Air Capability Development Center as well.

Polish-Hungarian Cooperation Plan Signed This Year Again

Representatives of the Ministries of Defence of Poland and Hungary signed a military-to-military cooperation plan in Budapest on 13 February. On the Hungarian side, Colonel István Hajnal, Head of the MoD Department for International Cooperation, and on the Polish side, Colonel Sławomir Mnitowski, defence, military and air attaché of the Republic of Poland signed the document.

Maintenance for the first time in Hungary

Aircraft technicians of the Kecskemét-based HDF 101st Aviation Wing recently carried out annual maintenance work on the KC-390 Millennium transport aircraft of the Hungarian Defence Forces inside the unique C-17 hangar of the multinational Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC) Program at the HDF 47th Air Base, Pápa, Hungary.
