Dániel Dósa Wins Gold, Men’s Épée Team Finishes Third

Foil fencer Corporal Dániel Dósa won a gold medal, and the men’s épée team won a bronze medal on Tuesday at the 49th CISM World Military Fencing Championship in Veszprém.

The Hungarian military foil fencer, a World Championship bronze medalist in both the individual and team events, advanced to the final by winning the bouts against Poland’s Maciej Bem (15–13), Ukraine’s Andriy Pohrebnyak (15–13), Germany’s Luis Klein (15–13), and Italy’s Mattia De Cristofaro (15–10).

In the final, Dósa got off to an excellent start against France’s Roger Vallerand, quickly pulling ahead to 9–3. Although his opponent closed the gap to 10–9, from then on it was the Hungarian who scored touches, triumphing 15–9.

In the men’s épée, the Hungarian team – comprising Lieutenant Gergely Siklósi, Captain András Rédli, Reserve Corporal Levente Buta, Reserve Corporal József Bálint Tamás – confidently defeated the Swiss team (45–37) in the quarter-final, but in the semi-final they lost by a single touch (39–38) to the South Koreans. In the third place play-off, the Hungarians faced the Italian team; leading throughout, they won 45–41 to secure the bronze medal.

On Monday’s opening day, Olympic, World and European champion Gergely Siklósi, Lieutenant at the HDF Sports Company, was the best-performing Hungarian, finishing sixth in the individual event.
