Egypt is a crucial ally of Hungary in curbing terrorism and illegal migration – said Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky in a video message posted on his Facebook-page on Monday, 18 September, after meeting Defence Minister Mohamed Zaki in Egypt.

Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky highlighted that they had reviewed the topics of illegal migration and terrorism in North Africa, as well as the situation of the Sahel, Egypt’s immediate neighbor, “the stability and balance of which are important to Hungary, since it can be considered a starting point of migration.”

According to the information provided by the minister, the two sides also discussed the Russo-Ukrainian War, of which the two countries share the same opinion: “what is needed is ceasefire and peace talks”. They also reviewed the points of cooperation between the two armed forces, and also discussed those defence industry developments that are important to both of them, the minister said.

Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky also noted that Egypt is independent in many aspects: Hungary, too, is striving to be able to draw on its own defence industry as far as possible in the development of its armed forces. In this regard, the two countries have a shared strategic interest. The two sides agreed to examine the possibilities of cooperation, added the minister.

“Peace requires strength, we carry on with the work”, said Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky at the end of the video post.
