Hungarian–Azeri defence relations taken to the next level

Taken to the level of prioritized strategic partnership in January, the relationship between Hungary and Azerbaijan offers an excellent framework for strengthening our military-defence cooperation as well, stated Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky after his discussion with Azerbaijani Minister of Defence General Hasanov Zakir Asgar oglu on 7 June.

Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said that the next stage of the military cooperation between the two countries is the opening of the Hungarian attaché office in Baku this summer, which will facilitate the further process of collective work in the fields of military cooperation and defence industry.

He emphasized that Azerbaijan does not only play a key role in the field of energetics from Europe’s point of view, but the stability of the Caucasian region is also an at least equally important aspect.

He told the press that he and Defence Minister Hasanov Zakir Asgar oglu had agreed on the mutual exchange of experiences. The minister pointed out that Azerbaijan has significant armed forces and wartime experience, and the planned exchange of subject matter experts will help their exploration.

The Minister of Defence had the opportunity to personally witness the advanced capabilities of the Azeri military during his visit to a training event of the special operations forces (SOF) units.

Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky stated that in the current security situation, the field of defence industry must be developed as a priority in all countries, and he had discussions in this spirit with Minister of Defence Industry Madat Guliyev on charting the possibilities for cooperation in the field of defence industry.

The Minister of Defence consulted with Azerbaijani Minister of Youth and Sports Farid Gayibov about taking to the next level the excellent sports diplomacy relations between the two countries.

He emphasized that an increasing number of young people can receive opportunity to learn about each other’s countries and cultures based on the values of sports in the framework of the Stipendium Hungaricum sports scholarship program.
