“Today’s meeting also proves that each war grave taken care of jointly and each memorial where we commemorate our fallen soldiers is a victory of diplomacy; a success of mutual respect and reconciliation, of human understanding and sincere wish for peace”, said MoD State Secretary for Force Development and Defence Policy Dr. Zsolt Kutnyánszky at the unveiling ceremony of the memorial erected in honour of the dead heroes from the current territory of the Republic of Moldova in the Heroes’ Cemetery, Miskolc, on 5 March.

The state secretary added that the Republic of Moldova can always rely on the help of Hungarians, because each soldier’s grave, who was killed in action in Hungary, is taken care of as if it were the final resting place of a Hungarian soldier.

“We see our own human fate in them. I have heard elderly ladies say many times in cemeteries that they take care of the graves of unknown soldiers, hoping that the graves of their relatives are also taken care of somewhere”, said Dr. Zsolt Kutnyánszky.

Defence Minister of the Republic of Moldova Anatolie Nosatîi said that the unveiling of the memorial is not only a commemoration but also a tribute to soldiers killed in action. “These people gave their lives for us, the post-war generations. Their memories will remain in our recollections forever, as the memorial will be a testimony of their bravery, sacrifice and devotion in the long run”, emphasized the defence minister.

He added that the unveiling of the memorial is another milestone in the two countries’ cooperation in the field of military memory. “The bilateral cooperation agreement signed today between the ministries of defence of the two countries involves cooperation within the field of history. The memorial is proof of our joint work”, concluded the defence minister.

At the ceremony, Dr. Zsolt Kutnyánszky, Lieutenant General Zoltán Mihócza, Deputy Chief of HDF Defence Staff for Territorial Defence, and Anatolie Nosatîi laid wreaths at the memorial, among others.
