Major General Dr. István Kun-Szabó visits Hungarian Defence Forces Baltic Air Policing QRA Detachment

Major General Dr. István Kun-Szabó, Director of the Defence Directorate of the Office of the President of the Republic of Hungary, recently visited the Hungarian Defence Forces Baltic Air Policing Quick Reaction Alert (BAP QRA) Detachment stationed in Lithuania. He was accompanied by János Béres, Hungary’s ambassador accredited to Lithuania, and Colonel Kálmán Hüse, defence, military and air attaché.

During the visit, the major general was informed in detail by the contingent commander about the detachment’s organizational structure, functioning and tasks, and he also gained an insight into the tactical capabilities and deployment characteristics of the JAS 39 Gripen fighter aircraft.

During the visit, Major General Dr. István Kun-Szabó gained first-hand experience about the cooperation of NATO forces in the region, the joint tasks of allied nations and the current challenges of collective air policing operations.

In his speech addressed to the personnel, the major general conveyed the esteem and appreciation of President of the Republic of Hungary Dr. Tamás Sulyok for the outstanding performance of Hungarian airmen serving with the Baltic Air Policing (BAP) mission. He underlined that the airmen, with their self-sacrificing, disciplined and high-standard service, not only contribute to the security and defence of the Baltic states but also that of the whole Alliance system, thus strengthening Hungary’s commitment to NATO’s core values and missions.

At the end of the visit, Major General Dr. István Kun-Szabó presented the airmen of the contingent with the gifts of the president of the republic marking the head of state’s appreciation, and he also gave thanks for the exemplary professional service and the successful activities so far.
