Nearly a year on Mission over Kosovo

Aircrew and aircraft maintenance personnel serving in the Hungarian Defence Forces’ 86th Helicopter Wing have been deployed in Kosovo since March 2025. During this period, the brigade has already completed two rotations, and the third one is now approaching its conclusion.

This week, combat lifesaver (CLS) soldiers of the 33rd rotation of the HDF KFOR Contingent (KFOR Tactical Reserve Battalion, KTRBN) tested their skills in the fields of marksmanship, stretcher-bearing, treating casualties and intravenous access. The competition imitated an active combat environment, and, of course, was preceded by lengthy academic training and practical instruction, during which the CLS soldiers of the subunits had opportunity to brush up and deepen the knowledge they had acquired earlier.

Soldiers of the KFOR KTRBN took part in the Murphy Challenge physical fitness competition held at Camp Novo Selo. The challenge, established in memory of U.S. special operations soldier Michael P. Murphy, is designed to test both physical endurance and mental resilience. Participants measured their level of preparedness by completing tasks consisting of running, push-ups, squats, and pull-ups.

Hungarian Defence Forces’ Baltic Air Policing Mission Comes to an End

Starting from 1 August this year, the Hungarian Defence Forces performed the tasks of the Baltic Air Policing Mission. Since the 2004 NATO accession of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, in the spirit of collective defence, in four-month rotations (“blocks”), the NATO allies guarantee the security of the airspace of the three Baltic countries. Stationed on Siauliai Air Base, Lithuania as Block 69 of the BAP Mission, the Hungarian Defence Forces Baltic Air Policing (BAP) Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) Detachment was participating in the mission already on the fourth occasion after 2015, 2019 and 2022. The Hungarian Gripen fighter jets were scrambled on 22 occasions, and the Hungarian pilots logged more than 400 flight hours in four months.

He was accompanied by János Béres, Hungary’s ambassador accredited to Lithuania, and Colonel Kálmán Hüse, defence, military and air attaché.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó and MoD Parliamentary State Secretary Deputy Defence Minister Tamás Vargha recently paid a visit to Hungarian servicemembers serving in the Baltics. During their visit to the Hungarian Defence Forces Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) Detachment of the Baltic Air Policing (BAP) Mission, the minister acknowledged with satisfaction that the Hungarian airmen have demonstrated their ability, professional preparedness and dedication already on the fourth occasion, which earns good reputation for Hungary and the Hungarian Defence Forces within NATO.

Hungarian Flag Raised in Torrejón

The Hungarian flag was ceremoniously raised at the NATO Combined Air Operations Centre (CAOC) Torrejón, Spain, on 3 November. This flag-raising ceremony is held by all 19 nations serving in the centre each year, and within it, the CAOC personnel give thanks for the service together.
