Not a single drop can fall on the ground of the 150 thousand liters of fuel that is being handled by fuel supply specialist soldiers during the setting up, operation and dismantling of a Bulk Fuel Installation (BFI). Within the framework of structured cooperation, the German-Hungarian fuel supply Exercise Safety Fuel is held every year. The multinational personnel go on the exercise to work together from mid-April to the end of May.
“We can field this special »gas station« anywhere in the world in a couple of days” – says Lieutenant Colonel Attila Barna from the HDF Logistic Support Command. The personnel of the HDF Material Supply Storebase have been trained for this task, part of which is being conducted in Hetényegyháza, while the other part in Germany. The soldiers learn everything from fielding the BFI to safely operating it to the process of fuel supply, dismantling and transportation.
While fielding the system, they pay heightened attention to environmental protection. The tanks are surrounded by salvage tarpaulins, and any possible contaminant spillage is to be gathered in plastic trays placed under the pipe clamps. After a successful pressure test, the soldiers can start the fuel dispensing service. All items of equipment are explosive and flammable, so discipline is a basic requirement, and the soldiers must strictly wear antistatic working clothes in the area, where there is always a fire truck on standby. The BFI contains a laboratory whose staff examines, among others, distillation characteristics, density and visual features, cold filter plugging point (CFPP) and flash point in the interest of quality assurance of the kerosene and diesel oil.
If needed, the BFIs can be fielded not as independent systems but as part of a logistic base that can be made operational in two days to the extent that it is capable of servicing the military units.
