National Defence Medal to Major General László Sticz PhD
Text: Captain Milán Gajdos | Photo: by the author |  12:21 April 9, 2026Major General László Sticz PhD, serving as the Hungarian national military representative at the NATO Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), was awarded the gold grade of the French National Defence Medal (Médaille de la Défense Nationale) to recognize his performance as former EUFOR Commander and his outstanding cooperation with the French Armed Forces.
The decoration, inscribed “Armée de Terre” (Army), was established by French Defence Minister Charles Hernu on 21 April 1982. It is still awarded at the discretion of the French Ministry of Armed Forces and Veterans. The medal was ceremoniously presented to Major General Dr. László Sticz by Major General Stéphane Marchenoir, French national military representative at the NATO SHAPE, on behalf of the French defence minister.
According to the citation, Major General Dr. László Sticz, as former Commander of EUFOR Operation Althea, significantly contributed to crisis management in Bosnia and Herzegovina with his professional decisions. With his service, he strengthened regional security, and within the framework of the international mission, he also paid particular attention to efficient cooperation with French officers.
The decoration is a worthy recognition the successful service of Major General László Sticz PhD in strengthening regional security during his EUFOR Command Year.
