“We are purchasing one of the state-of-the-art radar systems in the world”, said Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky in the programme Napi Aktuális (Daily Current Topics) of Hír TV on Wednesday, 23 November.

„We are buying a world-class radar system, which is a component of the layered defense system named “Iron Dome”, and will complement it with the ground-based National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS), the logic of which also resembles the Israeli Iron Dome. These two items of hardware simultaneously provide security. Moreover, in the framework of the National Defence and Armed Forces Development Program, military equipment is being continuously delivered to Hungary to strengthen partly the land forces and partly the system of air defence”, the Minister of Defence said.

In answer to a question whether there would be enough soldiers for operating the new items of equipment, Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky stated that Hungary has a vital interest in making as many people as possible realize that they are personally needed to provide security in the country.

“It is important that we should build strong and independent armed forces. If all NATO member countries achieve that, then this defence alliance will be workable. We may buy all the drones, tanks and other military equipment in the world; however, it will be not worth much if there are no well-trained, resolute and brave Hungarian soldiers who can operate them”, added the minister.

The Minister of Defence also talked about the importance of calm and the rapid flow of information in connection with the events of the Russo-Ukrainian war, for example the missile accident in Poland.

“The government of Hungary calls for a ceasefire and the start of peace talks. The Hungarian Defence Forces are placed on high alert, and it is especially true of the air force. The military is ready to react to unexpected situations as well”, said the minister.
