Hungarian Defence Forces Baltic Air Policing Mission reaches halfway point

During the two months that have passed since 1 August, Hungarian Gripens have had 11 Alpha and 43 Tango scrambles. However, the Hungarian airmen not only provide airspace protection for the Baltic republics, but are also closely cooperating with NATO forces stationed in the region. Among other things, they have participated in exercises as well as in joint demo and training flights – declared Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky.

Hungarian Reserve Company in Bosnia Again

The reserve company of the Hungarian Defence Forces serves in Sarajevo again with EUFOR Operation ALTHEA, the European Union’s peacekeeping mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina. These soldiers form a separate unit that is not involved in everyday tasks in peacetime, but is deployable, if necessary, for example on large-scale exercises or if the security situation requires reinforcement.

After the 20 November session of the Defence Council, Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky gave a report in a video message on the situation created by the Russo-Ukrainian conflict. The minister said that “to prepare for all possibilities, I have ordered that the newly procured air surveillance and air defence assets and the capabilities built on them be fielded in the north-eastern part of Hungary”.

Hungary’s increasing engagement abroad and the changed international environment have necessitated the further development of the tactical fighter capability of the air force. For this reason, the government of Hungary has made a decision to procure four additional JAS 39 Gripen multirole tactical fighters to complement the 14 JAS 39s already in service – announced Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky.
