On 8–9 November, Defence Policy Directors from the members states (Austria, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Poland in observer status) of the Central European Defence Cooperation (CEDC) met in Reichenau an der Rax, Austria. Hungary was represented at the event by MoD Deputy State Secretary for Defence Policy László Hajnik.

Tribute to the common past

The memorial to Austro-Hungarian troops in Gallipoli Peninsula Historical National Park, Canakkale, Turkey pays tribute to the common past of Hungary and Turkey, said Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky on Tuesday, 25 October, on the occasion of unveiling – together with Turkish Minister of National Defence Hulusi Akar – a monument to those Austro-Hungarian artillerymen who had fought in defence of the Dardanelles during the First World War.

SECURITY ISSUES ON THE AGENDA

The Hungarian Deputy State Secretary for Defence Policy of the Ministry of Defence participated in the security policy forum held in Budva, Montenegro. Mr László Hajnik had a discussion with the security experts present at the conference with regional and global trends, and current challenges on its agenda. This year, the main issues of the conference's panel discussions and presentations included – among others – the security challenges affecting the Western Balkan region.

Hungary supports the creation of a more active European Union, which can provide a quick and effective response to the security challenges of the next period, said Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky at an informal meeting of EU Defence Ministers in Prague. He pointed out that Hungary can significantly contribute to the strengthening of Europe’s defence technological and industrial base, and is carrying out one of the largest military development projects in Eastern Europe.

Solidarity among NATO member states is highly important in the present situation

Hungary and Lithuania both perceive “close up” the gravity of the Russo-Ukrainian War, and solidarity among NATO member states is highly important in the present security situation. In this spirit, the Hungarian Defence Forces’ Gripen fighter aircraft have already been conducting the Baltic Air Policing mission for the third time, and the Lithuanian minister of defence said thanks for it, Hungarian Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky told the press after his discussions in Lithuania.

On 17 May, EU Defence Ministers met in Brussels to discuss the implementation of the Strategic Compass, the creation of a Hub for EU Defence Innovation (HEDI), as well as the “Scoping EU defence investment gaps” analysis. Hungary was represented at the EU Foreign Affairs Council (Defence) meeting by Defence State Secretary István Szabó.
