Euro-Atlantic Commitment

During the constructive and cordial meeting, the participants reviewed the tasks to be addressed following the NATO summit in Ankara. Javier Colomina praised Hungary’s activity as an ally and welcomed the political statements made at the meeting of heads of state and government, which demonstrated Hungary’s Euro-Atlantic commitment. He highlighted that the summit proved to be a success overall, and the Alliance once again reaffirmed its unity. Regarding the future, he explained that these commitments carry a positive message, but it is also important that they be accompanied by realistic plans. He emphasized that any investment in defence serves the security of allied countries. The capabilities withdrawn by the United States must be collectively replaced by the allies; everyone is needed in this process. Regarding support for Ukraine, Colomina emphasized that the Alliance also considers supporting the country a top priority. He added that they recognize the shift in government policy and highly appreciate the efforts toward a constructive policy.

During the meeting, the State Secretary reaffirmed Hungary’s Euro-Atlantic commitment, as well as the intention to engage in a pragmatic and constructive cooperation. He highlighted that NATO is the strongest and most successful alliance in history, and that Hungary’s membership is the cornerstone of the country’s security. He agreed with the Deputy Assistant Secretary General that the Alliance successfully demonstrated its unity in Ankara. The security policy environment creates a good opportunity for European allies to engage in meaningful cooperation, particularly in the defence industry. Regarding Ukraine, the State Secretary for Defence explained that Hungary’s goal is to build good neighbourly relations. The country continues to adhere to its policy of providing assistance limited to non-lethal equipment, while at the same time taking a constructive stance toward major European initiatives and processes.

During the meeting, the importance of NATO’s 360-degree approach was also discussed. State Secretary Varga emphasized that Hungary continues to support the Alliance’s balanced threat assessment, which pays due attention not only to challenges from the east but also to security risks coming from the south. Given Hungary’s geographical location, the Western Balkans region is a priority for the country, but it also strives to actively contribute to the alliance’s efforts in the broader southern region.
