During Exercise Brave Warrior, the personnel of the 9th rotation of the multinational NATO Forward Land Forces Battle Group, stationed in Hungary, demonstrated their readiness. Thanks to their cohesion and the joint command structure and procedures, the Hungarian-led battlegroup successfully defeated the opposing forces hiding in the trenches of the Bakony Hills.

The training event is held twice a year, providing an opportunity to assess NATO interoperability and combat readiness, as well as to evaluate the joint operational capabilities of the participating units.

During the exercise, the sub-units of the battle group work in an operational environment in which they must simultaneously move and manoeuvre, utilise intelligence information, lead the Hungarian, Italian and Croatian sub-units, coordinate fire support, ensure resupply, and respond to the actions of the opposing force.

“The battle group is based on the 1st Infantry Battalion of the HDF 25th Armoured Brigade. In addition to the brigade based in Tata, numerous HDF units are providing modular elements to the exercise; thus the HDF are also providing artillery, air defence, civil-military liaison, engineering and CBRN defence elements,” said Brigadier General Zoltán Németh, brigade commander, in response to our question.

During the exercise, the battle group’s primary task was to halt an attack by enemy forces. According to the scenario, the allies used explosives to blast a passage through the territory occupied by the enemy; assault units then drove out the enemy with air support; and, following the successful breakthrough, cleared and secured the trench system.
