It has been nearly three years since the first Lynx infantry fighting vehicles arrived in Hungary. Lieutenant General Andreas Marlow heard about the lessons learned; he visited Hódmezővásárhely in person to learn about the state-of-the-art technology vehicles closely.

Lieutenant General Andreas Marlow, Vice Chief of the German Army, made an official visit to Hungary, during which Hódmezővásárhely was a prominent station. The guest and the accompanying delegation watched the Lynx vehicles with Brigadier General Balázs Szloszjár, Deputy Commander of the HDF Joint Operations Command, and Colonel Ádám Dienes, Deputy Commander of the HDF 30th Mechanized Infantry Brigade. The previous day, they were informed about the operation of the Command in Székesfehérvár. The goal of the visit to the Hungarian Great Plain was for the German party to gain firsthand experience of the German-developed Lynx’s entry into service in Hungary. The Bundeswehr is constantly assessing which combat vehicles are suitable for the future development of its armed forces; therefore, it is especially important for them to learn about the operation and practical experiences of the vehicle types already in use in Hungary.

“The Lynx is still under development. We work out the required changes and fix the mistakes together with the manufacturer”, said Brigadier General Szloszjár. He emphasized that cooperation and sharing lessons learned honestly are indispensable for successfully commissioning a truly modern and reliable fighting vehicle. Based on the lessons learned, the hardware capabilities of the vehicle are excellent: its engine, quickness, cross-country capacity and armour protection. The development is currently focusing on the fine-tuning of the software system. As in the case of Gripen fighter aircraft, the software plays as important a role as the physical construction in the state-of-the-art system of Lynx.

Lieutenant General Andreas Marlow told us that he had already had work experience with the Hungarian Defence Forces in Afghanistan. “I am really looking forward to seeing the development of the HDF, the direction of armed forces development. We can mutually learn from each other.”
